Roots, Old and New: Music As Family, Future, and Narrative
Emma Mead
Senior Music Presentation
Spring 2021

Overview
Stories inherently have meaning (i.e. plot). However, the act of storytelling gives meaning. To put it simply, telling stories in the company of others allows us to pass on a historical sense of identity, and in some cases, allows us to cultivate new meaning and identity. That is the basic premise behind this project: to tell meaningful stories, both old and new, in song form.

This project is purposefully interdisciplinary. After all, this project is supposed to represent my cumulative four years spent at Eckerd. Throughout my education, I have learned the importance of "thinking outside" of singular disciplines, and you will see that reflected in numerous aspects of this project. I draw upon concepts from literature and communications in order to enhance the musical ideas that I set forth.

This project truly has been a long time coming, and I don't intend to stop here. Here's to my roots: old, new, and still growing. - Emma
